Regional Director of Operations
North Carolina

Summary:

We’ve been retained to find a Regional Director of Operations for 2nd Chance.  This is a newly created position and will be based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  Initially this person will lead the Mood Treatment Center operation, evolving into a broader, regional leadership executive role.  This is a great opportunity with a built in growth path.

The Organization:

2nd Chance, based in Phoenix, AZ was founded in 2014 and partnered with RiverGlade Capital in April 2021.  Since that time, their initial 4 locations have expanded to 9 in Arizona with another 2 opening soon.   2nd Chance provides comprehensive behavioral outpatient treatment across the full spectrum of mental health including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and substance use disorders.

In August of 2022, 2nd Chance acquired Mood Treatment Center (MTC) based in Winston-Salem, NC,

founded by Dr. Chris Aiken in 2003. The Mood Treatment Center has grown to 2 MDs, 25 clinicians, and

50 therapists in 8 locations in North Carolina. In total they have 120 employees.  From your look

impression at Mood Treatment Center’s website, www.moodtreatmentcenter.com, you’ll immediately

see something different.  It is easy to discern a genuine care for patients beyond just the service and

treatment they provide.  It is much more holistic and educational.  Dr. Aiken has a genuine passion for

patient care.  He is well known nationally for his writing, teaching, publications, and podcast.  He has

built a brand and reputation in the North Carolina market that has created a waiting list of patients as

they continue to expand and grow.  They’ve also had the luxury of not having difficulty recruiting clinical

staff.

The impetus behind Mood Treatment Center and Dr. Aiken joining 2nd Chance is to greatly expand this qualitative model on both a regional and national basis.

In the same transaction, 2nd Chance also acquired Solace Psychiatric Clinic in Houston, TX.  They currently have 4 locations with 12 clinical providers. www.solacepsychiatry.com.

Private equity partners are not all created equal.  The RiverGlade team has a long and well-respected history in the healthcare sector.  RiverGlade’s approach and history has been to take a foundational organization and support not just the external growth, but the internal infrastructure to create a sustainable organization ready to launch to the next level.  This may sound rudimentary, but not all PE partners are the same.  Some truly have the buy it, bundle it, and sell it practice; without really enhancing or adding sustaining value.  This, among other factors contribute to what I’m labeling “PE-PTSD”.  I’m happy to expand on this.

The Opportunity:

As Regional Director of Operations, the first priority for this person will be leading the Mood Treatment Center with its 8 locations in North Carolina.  As outstanding a job Dr. Aiken and his team has done in developing a wonderful clinical model, they have never had experienced healthcare executive leadership.

Overall, this person will provide strategic direction and leadership. This includes:

  • Lead and facilitate the integration with 2nd Chance corporately

  • Lead the development of operational systems and organizational model that can be replicated

  • Lead growth and development both of de novo as well as leadership of acquired organizations

  • Budgeting resources and expenses as necessary to achieve a positive outcome

  • Providing mentorship and coaching to a team of clinical and non-clinical professionals

  • Build trusting and open relationships

  • Foster a collaborative and supportive, value-people culture

  • Coordinate, monitor, and manage regional P&L

  • Improve processes, policies, and practices to achieve company goals and ensure practices adhere to company-wide established guidelines.

  • Incorporates values into daily activities focusing on process improvements, patient improvements, patient safety and premier patient satisfaction

  • Addresses top growth priorities, focusing on same practice growth and provide due diligence and operational conversions on acquisitions.

  • Attracts talent to ensure a competent team capable of carrying out business strategies.

  • Supports a strong performance management and culture of accountability by mentoring staff and providing frequent and constructive feedback.

  • Proven experience leading a high performing team.
