Cardiac
Surgical Physician Assistant
The
Rottman Group has been retained to find a Cardiac Surgical Physician
Assistant for
the St. John’s Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery Associates, Inc.
(SJCTSA), in St. Louis, Missouri.
The Position
This
person will be part of a very exciting time of evolution and transition of
clinical practice development within cardiac services of the
St. John's Mercy Medical Center as well as the SJCTSA practice. The
Cardiac Surgical Physician Assistant will be involved in a broad scope of
patient care of the cardiac surgery patient, from assisting in the OR to patient
coverage in the ICU, to being part of 24/7 house coverage for patient care.
A few differences this person may find in this specific opportunity:
A very comprehensive "allowing" of what the physician assistant will be able to do in way of scope of practice. This person will be "utilized to the fullest," versus being dedicated to menial tasks.
An environment that is protective of the physician assistants being "over-worked". This is defined as no more than 50 hours of work per week. If there are circumstances that create a need beyond this, there is a "credit bank" of either bonus incentive or P.T.O that is awarded. There is a peer group of other P.A.s to share the work load. This person will take call not more than two times per week.
The job duties, specifically, are:
Performs Patient Admission Workups which include history and physical examination on patients admitted to the Cardiac/Thoracic Service;
Makes rounds and examines patients on a daily basis, makes all necessary chart entries on a daily basis including the daily note and participates in the writing of standard pre-op/post-op and transfer orders;
Assists the Cardiac/Thoracic Surgeon during major and minor operative procedures as First, Second, or Third Assistant during all phases of the operation;
Responsible for all paperwork, post-op notes, progress notes, discharge notes and discharge summaries associated with the patients on the Cardiac/Thoracic Surgery Service;
Performs credentialing procedures as requested and supervised by a supervising physician on Cardiac/Thoracic Surgery Service;
May write medical orders which have been given verbally by a supervising physician (including medications, blood and blood products, laboratory tests, X-rays, invasive and non-invasive tests, consult requests, diet, patient activity level, and need for restraints);
Assists with patient care during office hours;
Performs other duties within credentialed privileges as required by Director of Cardiac Surgical P.A.'s, supervising physician, Department Chairman, and/or administrator/director of the department;
All clinical duties performed will be supervised by an attending physician designated as a supervising physician within the department;
Participates in the Quality Assurance Program of the Department of Heart and Vascular Services in a meaningful fashion;
Is
present at and participating in a significant number of morbidity and
mortality conferences.
This person will have completed a two-year accredited Physician's Assistant
and/or Surgeon's Assistant Program, and be BCLS Certified, ACLS Certified, or
will complete ACLS Certification within the first six months of employment.
The
Program
St.
John’s recently recruited Dr. William Scott, M.D., to be the "clinical
architect" and leader of the heart and vascular program at St. John's Mercy
Medical Center. Dr. Scott is very well known and has trained/worked at
Princeton, Harvard, Mass General, Yale, and Stanford. Most recently, Dr.
Scott led the heart and vascular services at Winthrop University Medical Center,
Long Island, NY, and through his leadership, turned this facility into (based on
risk adjusted mortality data) the #1 cardiac hospital in New York. It
is that elevation of the clinical program at St. John's that this person will be
an important part of. This program will not only be transforming
clinically, but will be beginning construction of a new heart hospital,
Construction
of the new 122-bed heart hospital will begin within the next year, and will
include five CVORs
St.
John’s did 650 open hearts last year along with 7,000 diagnostic
caths, angioplasty, and E.P., and 800+
vascular procedures.
The goal is of this program is to expand and develop to approximately 1,200 open
heart surgeries within the next five years.
Though Dr. Scott has worked with physician assistants for thirteen years now,
the use of physician assistants is new to St. John's. This person needs to
be energetic and understand that this is a developing service versus one that is
firmly established. Thus, they need to have very good interpersonal skills
in dealing with a multi-disciplinary patient care team.
The Organization
St.
John's has a long-standing history dating back to the 1800's. Today, with
