Clinical Services Manager

Sacramento Center for Hematology and Medical Oncology

(SCHMO)

Sacramento , California

The Rottman Group, Inc. has been retained by U.S. Oncology and Sacramento Center for Hematology and Medical Oncology (SCHMO) to find a Clinical Services Manager.  This person will manage all of the nursing and clinical staff for this 8 physician medical oncology practice.  This is not only an opportunity to lead in a positive practice environment, but also to be opened up to the benefits of being part of the largest national oncology services organization in the United States .

Opportunity Overview:

Sacramento Center for Hematology and Medical Oncology (SCHMO) www.sacramentocancer.com, is an 8 physician medical oncology practice based in Sacramento , CA .  They do provide part time service in two satellite locations, but most care is provided in a singular location with 14 chemo chairs along with patient rooms.

Along with 8 RNs, this person will also manage another 10 non-RN staff that consists of medical assistants, techs, and clerical assistants.  This person will have operational responsibility for the chemotherapy treatment area along with the pharmacy and on-site lab.  Though this is a leadership position, this person will also be considered a “hands-on” manager and will still have the opportunity to be involved in patient care.

The physicians of SCHMO are well respected and get along well together.  Internally the physicians are known to have a very easy going and positive relationship with the staff of the practice.  It is a positive environment, but one that has lacked positive leadership.  This has been address with a new Executive Director, Sheldon Josephs that is relatively new to the practice.  Sheldon is a well accomplished practice management executive that brings a very positive leadership dynamic.  (I recruited Sheldon…he is good people!)  In total, this practice has approximately 1,600 patient visits per month.

Organization overview:

Aside from being a part of SCHMO, this practice is part of the U.S. Oncology, Inc. (www.usoncology.com).

In fact, they serve more cancer patients than any other single health-care organization in America .

The company ranks in the top half of its industry, placing fifth in the Diversified Outsourcing Services category, moving up two places from 2005.

Working in partnership with leading oncologists, U.S. Oncology’s goal is to provide physicians and their patients access to a full range of capabilities - including diagnostic imaging, radiation, chemotherapy, pharmaceuticals, clinical trials and more - in local community-based outpatient settings. As a result, physicians have access to the resources they need to ensure that their patients receive the care they need, without leaving the people they care about.

Through US Oncology's core services - plus their unparalleled national scale - they are advancing the delivery of high-quality oncology care in many ways.

They are accelerating the pace of cancer research by accruing patients to clinical trials, allowing more patients to have access to new molecules and therapies. They are bringing state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment technologies to local towns and cities. They are leveraging economies-of-scale to reduce health-care costs. And they are working with patient advocacy groups to drive public-policy efforts.

Putting it simply, U.S. Oncology is a strong force in the war on cancer, employing their nationwide resources to fight cancer in every way possible. In doing so, they are driving an innovative new services model and helping oncologists deliver the best possible care.

The Community:

With a wonderful climate and quality of life, Sacramento itself has a population of almost 500,000 with a metropolitan population of approximately 1.6 million.   Sacramento has a very moderate cost of living in comparison to the surrounding area while being close to all of the sights of the ocean coast, yet still being very close to the wonderful scenery and recreation of the Lake Tahoe area.

Sacramento ’s history began in 1839 when Johann Augustus Sutter settled at the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers . When the Mexican government and Governor Alvarado granted 48,000 acres of land to Sutter, they did not realize that they had given away a literal goldmine. Gold was discovered in 1848 just thirty miles east of Sacramento , in Coloma. The rest is history!

The news of the discovery spread like wildfire around the globe and fortune hunters came by the thousands from all corners of the world to California—Sacramento to be precise. In fact, it was recorded as the largest human migration in history. California became a state in 1850 and Sacramento its capital four years later. The city has been on the move ever since and is now one of the fastest growing regions in the United States .

Peacefully located in a leafy valley of scenic rivers and canopies of trees, today’s Sacramento is a cosmopolitan convergence of tall, gleaming buildings, hearty Victorians, splendid restaurants and shops, a vibrant arts scene, and a virtual cornucopia of state of the art meeting facilities. Sacramento has been called a snapshot of Wild West history in a modern, world-class city. With a plethora of first-class hotel rooms and attractions Sacramento offers an affordable and exciting vacation and meeting destination. Its amenities, combined with the rich history of California ’s Wild West, help visitors once again Discover Gold in California ’s Capital City .

If you really want to visit the past, step back in time to the California Gold Rush era in Old Sacramento, a 28-acre town of historic buildings, museums and monuments. With strong preservation efforts, the wooden sidewalks, horse-drawn carriages, Pony Express monuments and Mississippi-style riverboats reflect the nostalgic appeal of early American history.

That history comes to life through interactive experiences on steam engine train rides, tours of the State Capitol Building , and historic museum tours.
