Organizations: (local and national)

U.S Oncology:   (www.usoncology.com)

US Oncology is the nation's largest health-care services network devoted exclusively to cancer treatment and research, and a pioneer in community-based cancer care since 1993. Today, their network of approximately 1,000 affiliated physicians delivers care to more than half a million cancer patients each year - including over 15% of all newly diagnosed U.S. cases. In fact, they serve more cancer patients than any other single health-care organization in America .

Building upon their network of more than 450 sites of services, including 78 cancer centers, in 30 states, they ensure the latest technology and treatment advances at the local level through three core services:

Working in partnership with leading oncologists, U.S. Oncology’s goal is to provide physicians and their patients access to a full range of capabilities - including diagnostic imaging, radiation, chemotherapy, pharmaceuticals, clinical trials and more - in local community-based outpatient settings. As a result, physicians have access to the resources they need to ensure that their patients receive the care they need, without leaving the people they care about.

Through US Oncology's core services - plus their unparalleled national scale - they are advancing the delivery of high-quality oncology care in many ways.

They are accelerating the pace of cancer research by accruing patients to clinical trials, allowing more patients to have access to new molecules and therapies. They are bringing state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment technologies to local towns and cities. They are leveraging economies-of-scale to reduce health-care costs. And they are working with patient advocacy groups to drive public-policy efforts.

Putting it simply, U.S. Oncology is a strong force in the war on cancer, employing their nationwide resources to fight cancer in every way possible. In doing so, they are driving an innovative new services model and helping oncologists deliver the best possible care.

Community:

With a population of more than 320,000, Raleigh may be a city, but it lives like a small town, with shaded pedestrian streets, more than 153 park sites, historic cobblestone streets with period lighting and sidewalk cafes. One of the trendiest new parts of town, the warehouse district, is home to several restaurants, nightclubs and arcades. Glenwood South is a vibrant "in" area with singles and has several restaurants and bars, a brewery pub, and condos.

The Raleigh area is home to seven major institutions of higher learning, five of which date back to the 19th century: N.C. State University (1887); Peace College (1857); Shaw University (1865); Saint Augustine's College (1868); Meredith College (1891); Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (1956); and Wake Technical Community College. Nearby are the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and Duke University in Durham . Pictured: N.C. State Belltower.

Raleigh is a shopping mecca with seven major retail areas and numerous shopping centers. Three major malls boast more than 450 stores in all as North Carolina 's only Saks and Orvis open in Fall 2004 at Triangle Town Center (pictured here). Two long-time icons have reinvented themselves with multi-million dollar expansions and makeovers in Cameron Village and North Hills -- Raleigh 's new "Midtown."

Although the area is known for its college basketball rivalries, two professional sports teams also call Greater Raleigh home: Carolina Hurricanes (NHL hockey) and Carolina Mudcats (AA baseball).

The Raleigh area is home to a wide array of dining experiences that cover the globe in style and cuisine. From bistros to brewpubs to traditional Southern fare, the area offers great restaurants and authentic atmosphere. And with almost 100 restaurants and clubs in downtown Raleigh alone, you can easily sample a range of lively nightspots and entertainment districts like City Market (pictured here), Glenwood South or Warehouse District. Catch a live performance by a local band, dance the night away or hear a comedian at one of several comedy clubs.

Raleigh is known as the "City of Oaks " and often is described as "a park with a city in it." Trees planted at the city's inception still provide cooling shade for visitors to Moore Square Park ; where you'll find the city's signature copper acorn. Thus; "It’s so green here,” is how visitors often describe the area. And the mild year-round climate makes it easy to explore more than 200 parks, lakes, greenways and recreational areas like the JC Raulston Arboretum (pictured here), or to test your swing at any of the area’s 20-plus public-access golf courses. "

When it comes to golf destinations and quality of its links, the state of North Carolina ranks among the most recognized in the world from Pinehurst to pristine Atlantic coast to the scenic Blue Ridge mountains . But North Carolina 's ace-in-the hole in any such discussion is the quality of golf in and around its metropolitan areas. Chief among those is the Raleigh area and its 20-plus courses that can be enjoyed year-round.
